The Ministry of Construction has hailed Maafaru International Airport as a powerful symbol of national progress and international partnership, crediting the vision and determination behind its development as a transformative force for the Maldives.
In a statement released via social media, the Ministry described the airport as more than just an infrastructure project, calling it a “symbol of progress, opportunity, and connection” for the nation. The statement emphasised that Maafaru Airport exemplifies what can be achieved when a bold national vision is matched with committed international cooperation.
The Ministry extended its sincere appreciation to the President of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, along with the government and the people of the UAE, for their pivotal role in making the project a reality. Special thanks were also directed toward the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), whose Director General was acknowledged for the Fund’s significant financial and technical contributions.
Constructed with support from the ADFD, Maafaru International Airport is part of a broader strategy to boost regional connectivity, promote tourism in the northern atolls, and ease the burden on Velana International Airport. The facility features a 2,200-meter runway capable of accommodating large aircraft, alongside a modern passenger terminal.
The airport is expected to unlock new economic opportunities and enhance mobility for residents and visitors alike, reinforcing the Maldives’ status as a key destination in the Indian Ocean.
