The Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development has announced that over MVR 85 million has been disbursed so far in 2025 under the government’s flagship First Degree Scheme — bringing the total disbursement to more than MVR 235 million since the programme’s inception.
According to updated figures released on July 10, the scheme has seen significant growth this year, with 1,100 new students enrolled in undergraduate programmes across various institutions.
The ministry also reported that 2,068 students have successfully graduated in 2025 through the scheme, while a total of 8,086 students are currently pursuing their first degrees with state funding.
The First Degree Scheme is a cornerstone of the government’s education policy, aimed at increasing access to higher education by providing full scholarships to eligible students. It covers tuition fees, monthly stipends, and other academic expenses for students studying in both local and international institutions.
Officials noted that the growing number of graduates is a positive indicator of the programme’s success in developing a skilled and educated workforce, aligned with the national goals of economic diversification and social mobility.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring continued support for Maldivian youth seeking higher education.
