In a powerful display of unity and national pride, the Maldives celebrated its 60th Independence Day with a historic joint assembly of the country’s two key security institutions — the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Maldives Police Service (MPS). The ceremony, held at the Maldives Centre for Social Education in Malé, was the first time personnel from both forces gathered under one roof for an Independence Day pledge, symbolising renewed national solidarity and a strengthened commitment to safeguarding the nation.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu presided over the unprecedented gathering, which marked a shift from the traditional format of separate ceremonies. Speaking at the event, he underscored the significance of the joint assembly as a representation of institutional cohesion and national purpose.
As part of the formal proceedings, both forces recommitted themselves to their duties in a pledge ceremony. The MNDF’s oath was led by Chief of Defence Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmy, while Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen delivered the pledge on behalf of the police force.
Medals Awarded for Distinguished Service
President Muizzu also presented a series of service medals, recognising exemplary commitment and sacrifice within the ranks of both institutions. Six medals were conferred for long-standing service, while eleven others were awarded for exceptional contributions across the military and police.
The president reaffirmed his administration’s focus on strengthening the country’s security sector through increased investment in infrastructure, training, and institutional reform. He praised the commitment of both MNDF and MPS personnel, noting that their service forms the backbone of national sovereignty and public trust.
Military Chief Affirms Unwavering Defence of Sovereignty
Delivering a resolute message, Major General Ibrahim Hilmy declared the MNDF’s unwavering stance in defending the nation’s independence. “We will not concede even an inch or a millimetre of our land,” he stated, invoking the Maldives’ long-standing legacy of sovereignty that spans over 4,500 years.
He reflected on key moments in the country’s history, including the events of 3 November 1988, when the military repelled a coup attempt. These instances, he said, demonstrated the armed forces’ readiness to sacrifice body and soul in defence of the nation. Referencing the MNDF’s naval operations, he described Maldivian troops as “sea hawks” — agile, strategic, and always prepared.
Major General Hilmy also acknowledged President Muizzu’s efforts in strengthening the military’s capabilities, crediting his leadership with bringing renewed attention and resources to the defence sector. He concluded by praising the Maldives Police Service for its essential role in maintaining national stability and law enforcement.
Police Commissioner Emphasises Reform and Public Service
In his remarks, Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen highlighted the ceremony as a “historic moment” and expressed gratitude for the president’s initiative to unite the forces. He outlined the police service’s mandate — protecting citizens, enforcing the law, and preserving public order — and reaffirmed the commitment of every officer to those principles.
Commissioner Naveen discussed a range of national security challenges, including drug trafficking, terrorism, gang violence, and crimes against children. He noted collaborative efforts with public and private stakeholders to improve road safety and address the issue of undocumented migrant workers.
He also revealed upcoming reform efforts aimed at strengthening the police institution, including enhancing training, improving investigative standards, and focusing on human resource development. He thanked President Muizzu for supporting the evolution of the police service and reiterated the MPS’s dedication to building public confidence in law enforcement.
A Unified Front for a Stronger Future
The joint assembly served as a powerful symbol of the Maldives’ ongoing journey as a sovereign nation and its commitment to upholding peace, security, and the rule of law. As the country marked six decades of independence, the event demonstrated a new chapter of collaboration between the armed forces and police — a united front dedicated to protecting the nation and serving its people.
