Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced that nearly all vessels operating in the Malé North Harbour are now officially registered, marking a significant step towards streamlining harbour operations and enhancing service delivery.
According to MPL, 99 percent of cargo and passenger vessels using the harbour have completed the registration process. The remaining unregistered vessels are largely awaiting the completion of required documentation, with the company actively assisting owners to finalise the process.
Speaking on PSM News’ Raajje Miadhu programme, Ahmed Hamdhullah Rasheed, MPL’s Assistant General Manager in charge of North Harbour operations, said the initiative aims to ensure that only registered vessels are permitted to anchor in the area. He noted that MPL staff conduct daily visits in the mornings and evenings to inform fishing vessel operators about registration requirements.
“There is no fixed deadline for registration – it’s an ongoing process. Our team is on the ground every day to explain the services available, the necessary documentation, and even assist with submitting applications. Documents can be sent via Viber or WhatsApp, and MPL will process the registration,” Hamdhullah explained.
MPL assumed management of the North Harbour alongside the commercial port and the harbour area near the fish market. Hamdhullah stressed that the company’s approach is to operate the facility as a public service rather than solely as a commercial venture, with the goal of providing smooth and accessible services for all users.
As part of ongoing improvements, MPL is also working to expand the facilities available at the North Harbour. Plans include introducing fuel and ice supply points within the harbour to better support vessel operators and meet the growing demands of the maritime community.
