President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on the international community, including members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), to join hands in championing justice, dignity, and peace for the Palestinian people. He made the appeal during his address at the “SCO Plus” meeting held on Monday in Tianjin.
The President stressed that the Maldives, marking 60 years since gaining independence and joining the United Nations this year, continues to uphold its founding principles of peace, diplomacy, and dialogue. He reaffirmed that these values remain central to the Maldives’ role in the global community.
Highlighting the worsening humanitarian situation in Palestine, President Muizzu expressed deep concern over the plight of Palestinians, reiterating the Maldives’ unwavering support for their legitimate right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent and sovereign State based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He further denounced Israel’s ongoing actions against Palestinians, describing them as clear violations of international law and fundamental human rights. The President noted that the Maldives has consistently voiced its opposition to the occupation authorities and has condemned what he termed Israel’s “inhumane practices.”
President Muizzu is currently in China on an official visit at the invitation of President Xi Jinping, where he is attending the SCO Summit and engaging in high-level discussions on regional cooperation, peace, and development.
