The Maldives’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Maldivian nationals to avoid travelling to Nepal as the country grapples with violent unrest and political upheaval.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Ministry urged Maldivians currently in Nepal to steer clear of protest sites and follow guidance from local authorities, the Maldivian High Commission in India, and the Ministry itself. Officials stressed that the safety of Maldivian citizens must remain the highest priority.
The unrest was sparked by a Supreme Court ruling that shut down social media platforms, inflaming anti-corruption protests that have spread across the country. Demonstrations in Kathmandu and other areas have turned deadly, with at least 19 people reported killed and dozens injured in clashes with security forces. Authorities have imposed an indefinite curfew in parts of the capital, asking residents to remain indoors except for essential needs.
The crisis has already forced the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, deepening political instability in the Himalayan nation.
The Ministry noted that a significant number of Maldivian doctors are pursuing specialised studies in Nepal. Their safety, it said, is being closely monitored in coordination with the Maldivian High Commission in India and Nepalese authorities. Assistance will be provided if the situation deteriorates further.
