The President’s Office has announced the permanent closure of Media Fenda, the facility established opposite its headquarters to provide journalists with a dedicated space to access official information.
Launched on 29 May 2025 as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, Media Fenda was intended to support accredited reporters in covering government affairs. Access was limited to media outlets formally registered with the Maldives Media Council and those holding official press permits.
In a statement, the President’s Office said that despite these regulations, unauthorised individuals repeatedly gained entry to the premises, undermining the facility’s intended purpose and disrupting the work of accredited journalists. Officials also noted that violations within the designated Green Zone created difficulties for members of the public visiting nearby government offices.
The statement further explained that Media Fenda had not been in active use in recent months. Following a review, the government decided to close the facility effective 14 September 2025.
While acknowledging the closure, the President’s Office assured that alternative arrangements will remain in place to ensure journalists continue to have access to official information and government events.
