President Muizzu Opens 2025 Principals’ Conference with Call for Practical Education Reforms

The annual Principals’ Conference 2025 officially opened today at CROSSROADS Maldives, with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu inaugurating the two-day event that brings together education leaders from across the country.

A total of 210 school principals are attending this year’s conference, which the Ministry of Education described as a turning point in how national education policy is shaped. Unlike previous years, the focus this time is shifting away from policy drafting and toward practical, teacher-level discussions aimed at producing actionable outcomes.

According to ministry officials, the agenda for the 2025 conference was built around feedback and insights gathered directly from teachers, marking a deliberate effort to make the discussions more grounded in classroom realities.

Key topics include teacher training frameworks, professional development reforms, and strategies to recruit and retain qualified educators—issues that have long been identified as critical to improving the Maldives’ education system.

Officials said the format represents a strategic shift from earlier conferences, which often centred on high-level policy deliberations but provided limited opportunities for teachers and principals to exchange views and propose practical solutions.

By prioritising open dialogue among school leaders and educators, the ministry aims to encourage bottom-up reform, ensuring that decisions reflect the experiences of those working most closely with students.

The conference will conclude on Sunday, with the Ministry expected to outline key takeaways and a roadmap for integrating teacher-driven recommendations into national education planning.
