Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla has reiterated the Parliament’s commitment to supporting the government in carrying out its national development agenda, saying there will be no delay in passing key bills that benefit the Maldivian people.
He made the remarks in Laamu Fonadhoo during a ceremony held as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing tour of the atoll. Fonadhoo is part of the Speaker’s own constituency.
Addressing the gathering, Speaker Abdul Raheem praised the administration’s performance over the past year, noting that one of its greatest achievements has been managing the country’s financial obligations without falling into bankruptcy — a challenge that had loomed large when the government took office.
He said the current administration continues to implement critical initiatives to ensure financial stability and national progress, adding that Parliament remains fully aligned with this vision.
“There will be no delay in any matters required to support the government of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu through Parliament,” he said. “There will be no delay in passing important bills submitted by the government.”
The Speaker also emphasised that lawmakers stand ready to fulfil the expectations of citizens and to support legislation that advances development and prosperity.
Abdul Raheem highlighted the government’s decision to develop Fonadhoo as an urban centre, describing it as a transformative step for the island and surrounding region.
During the ceremony, several major development agreements were signed, including:
-
Construction of a Maldives National University (MNU) campus and a language school in Fonadhoo
-
Development of an office complex
-
Third phase of harbour development and road construction projects
-
Dredging and beach protection works
-
Development and operation of Kadhdhoo Airport
-
Establishment of a sports complex on the island
The Speaker noted that these projects represent the largest and most significant investments made in Fonadhoo to date.
Abdul Raheem concluded his remarks by expressing optimism about the government’s efforts to deliver on its pledges and uplift local communities.
He said residents eagerly await the day when President Dr Mohamed Muizzu inaugurates the completed projects, marking another chapter in Fonadhoo’s growth story.
