President Announces 300 Housing Units for Laamu Gan, Compensation for Relocated Families

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to construct 300 new housing units in Laamu Gan this year, alongside the disbursement of compensation to residents relocated under the government’s population consolidation policy.

Speaking to residents of Gan on Tuesday evening as part of his ongoing atoll tour, the President said that one agreement for 100 housing units had been signed during the visit, another project for 100 units is already under construction, and a third phase—comprising an additional 100 units—will begin soon. Once complete, the island will host one of the largest housing developments in the region, he noted.

President Muizzu reaffirmed his administration’s pledge to provide financial compensation to those who relocated to Gan from other islands. He said funds have already been allocated for the initiative, and ministry officials will soon visit the island to gather beneficiary information.

According to the President, MVR 8.45 million will be distributed among recipients, with each household receiving MVR 50,000 as compensation.

Highlighting broader development efforts across Laamu Atoll, the President said progress is underway on multiple fronts, including the tourism sector, where a new agreement has been signed for the development of a resort in Gasgandufinolhu.

He stressed that Laamu Gan—one of the Maldives’ largest inhabited islands—has not received adequate development in the past, despite its potential. His administration, he said, remains committed to ensuring equitable development across all islands, regardless of population size or political affiliation.

“Peace and progress can only be achieved through fairness and equal opportunity,” the President said, adding that his government’s focus is to bring lasting benefits to communities through housing, infrastructure, and job creation.
