First Lady Sajida Mohamed has officially launched the “Healthy Life, Happy Society” national campaign, a new initiative aimed at fostering an empowered and health-conscious society across all islands of the Maldives.
The campaign was inaugurated at a special ceremony held in Guraidhoo, Kaafu Atoll, attended by Minister of Health Dr Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim, senior officials, and community representatives.
Speaking at the event, Minister Nazim said the government is prioritising preventive health measures to reduce the nation’s disease burden. He noted that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration is focused on preventing illness before it occurs, calling the creation of a healthier population the cornerstone of the President’s health policy.
“Under the President’s guidance, we are committed to taking every step necessary to protect our people from diseases,” Minister Nazim said. “His vision and determination set an example for how leadership can drive public well-being.”
The Minister emphasised that the campaign’s success will rely on both strong legal frameworks and active community participation, noting that sustainable health improvement requires collaboration across every level of society.
The “Healthy Life, Happy Society” initiative seeks to increase awareness and prevent lifestyle-related diseases that are on the rise in the Maldives. The programme will introduce long-term public health activities targeting children, youth, women, and the elderly, encouraging healthier diets, physical activity, and community engagement.
The campaign is a collaborative effort between multiple partners, including:
-
Ministry of Health
-
Local health centres and hospitals
-
Education institutions
-
Island Councils
-
Women’s Development Committees
-
Private associations and institutions
-
Youth focal points
According to the Health Ministry, campaign progress will be closely monitored and evaluated, with structured reporting systems in place to track activities and outcomes.
To encourage participation and recognise excellence, three national awards have been introduced under the campaign: the Rashu Award, School Award, and Jamiyyaa Award. These will be presented annually to individuals and organisations that demonstrate exceptional achievement in health promotion and community engagement.
Minister Nazim concluded by noting that the campaign will be implemented swiftly and inclusively, ensuring the active involvement of all communities. He added that the initiative reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to building a resilient, healthy, and empowered Maldivian society.
