BML Raises Overseas Debit Card Payment Limits Effective Tomorrow

The Bank of Maldives (BML) has announced a significant increase in overseas payment limits for its debit cards, a move set to take effect tomorrow.

Under the revised policy, customers using MVR-denominated debit cards will now have a monthly spending limit of USD 1,000 for Point of Sale (POS) transactions abroad. Additionally, the monthly limit for travel and medical expenses outside the country has been increased to USD 3,000.

The update follows an earlier announcement made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in September, where he revealed that the bank’s overseas payment limits would be revised on 11 November, aligning with BML’s 43rd anniversary.

At the time, the President noted that the new limits would make it easier for Maldivians to purchase airline tickets, book hotel stays, and pay for medical treatment abroad directly using their debit cards. He also stated that travellers seeking medical care overseas could request direct payment authorisation for hospital and clinic expenses.

BML said the revision is aimed at improving access to foreign currency through official banking channels, thereby reducing dependence on parallel markets and making international transactions more convenient for customers.

The policy change is expected to ease financial barriers for travellers and patients while strengthening confidence in the official exchange system.
