President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has honoured the legacy of Al-Sultan al-Ghazi Hassan Izzuddin—fondly known as Dhon Bandaarain—as the Maldives marks Huravee Day, a national commemoration of the country’s liberation from Malabar rule.
In a message shared on social media, the president described Dhon Bandaarain’s triumph over foreign occupiers as a defining moment in Maldivian history, symbolising unshakable courage, unity, and the enduring spirit of independence.
Extending his greetings to the public, President Muizzu noted that 281 years have passed since Dhon Bandaarain led the decisive campaign that restored sovereignty to the Maldives. He emphasised that the struggle—remembered as a national Jihad—continues to hold deep meaning for generations.
Huravee Day marks the end of the Malabar occupation, a period of severe hardship marked by violence, destruction, and widespread suffering. President Muizzu recalled that Malé suffered extensive damage during the invasion, with homes and landmarks set ablaze, the reigning Sultan held captive, and citizens subjected to what he described as “inhumane torture.” The occupation lasted nearly three months before Dhon Bandaarain began the liberation effort.
“Today marks 281 years since this brave national Jihad freed the Maldives from the Holhin invaders,” the president wrote, recounting the atrocities and fear that defined the Malabar rule.
Dhon Bandaarain—born Dhon Hassan Manikufaanu of Muleege and later honoured with the title Al-Sultan al-Ghazi Hassan Izzuddin—assembled an army of roughly 200 Maldivian warriors to launch the counteroffensive. Their victory remains the focal point of Huravee Day celebrations and an enduring symbol of patriotism.
President Muizzu highlighted Dhon Bandaarain’s leadership, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to the nation, adding that his legacy continues to inspire Maldivians nearly three centuries later.
“The wisdom, vigilance, and deep love for this homeland demonstrated by Dhon Bandaarain live on with gratitude even as this historic event approaches its third century,” he said.
In closing, the president offered prayers for continued peace, prosperity, and independence for the Maldives, reaffirming that Dhon Bandaarain’s courage and patriotism will remain a guiding light for the nation.
