United Kingdom Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Seema Malhotra MP, paid a courtesy call on First Lady Sajidha Mohamed on Sunday morning at Mulee’aage.
The meeting centred on key areas of shared interest, including women’s empowerment, increasing female participation in politics and the workforce, combating gender-based violence, enhancing educational opportunities, and strengthening climate resilience.
First Lady Sajidha reflected on her experience in the civil service and her long-standing advocacy for children’s welfare. She outlined several government initiatives introduced under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration aimed at creating more opportunities for women and supporting their advancement in multiple fields.
She also highlighted the Maldives’ enduring partnership with the United Kingdom, expressing appreciation for the UK’s continued support—particularly in areas linked to economic development and institutional strengthening.
Minister Malhotra, in turn, commended the First Lady’s engagement and shared insights from her own work in promoting women’s advancement across various sectors. She also discussed strategies for enhancing community awareness surrounding gender issues and improving access to support systems.
Both sides underscored the importance of sustained collaboration and reaffirmed their commitment to further deepening Maldives-UK relations in the years ahead.
