President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that his administration will move forward with restructuring the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), stating that the reform is essential to safeguarding judicial independence and eliminating political influence within the justice system.
Speaking during a community meeting with residents of Henveyru in Malé City, the President said the upcoming changes are part of a broader effort to ensure the judiciary operates free from external pressure or political agendas. He reiterated that his government rejects political retaliation and is committed to ensuring transparency and impartiality in legal processes.
President Muizzu stressed that neither he nor members of his administration have instructed courts or judges to target political figures. As an example of judicial autonomy, he highlighted the consistent enforcement of drug-related rulings in recent months, arguing that such decisions demonstrate a shift toward a more confident and independent judiciary.
The President confirmed that legislative amendments will soon be submitted to modify the structure of the JSC, describing the move as the fulfilment of a key campaign pledge focused on reshaping the governance body. He added that the ultimate goal is for the public to witness a justice system operating freely and fairly.
Beyond restructuring the Commission, the administration plans to introduce additional support mechanisms for the judicial sector. This includes allocating a dedicated sectoral budget in the upcoming fiscal year and continuing compensation reforms initiated earlier to ensure pay parity across judicial roles.
The JSC currently consists of ten members responsible for overseeing judge appointments, conduct, and disciplinary matters. Reform discussions have emerged repeatedly in recent years amid concerns over accountability, transparency, and political influence.
President Muizzu said the planned reforms are designed to restore public trust and strengthen the rule of law, ensuring that the judiciary functions independently in alignment with constitutional principles.
