Hazardous Air Quality Prompts Red Alert in Parts of the Maldives

The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a red alert after air pollution levels across parts of the Maldives rose to hazardous levels, warning that the deteriorating air quality poses a risk to public health.

In an advisory released today, the Met Office said poor air quality has been recorded across the northern and central regions of the country, with conditions expected to remain hazardous for at least the next six hours. Authorities have urged the public to take precautions, stressing that the health risk applies not only to vulnerable groups but also to individuals without underlying medical conditions.

Air quality monitoring data shows a sharp increase in pollution levels, particularly in the Greater Malé region. Readings from the monitoring station in Villimalé recorded an air quality index (AQI) of 193, while Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo registered an AQI of 162—both levels classified as unhealthy and capable of causing adverse health effects with prolonged exposure.

The Met Office attributed the spike in pollution to dust particles transported from northern regions, including parts of India and the Himalayan belt. These particles are carried southward by prevailing winds during the northeast monsoon, a seasonal pattern that leads to similar air quality concerns each year.

While conditions are expected to gradually improve after Saturday as atmospheric conditions change, authorities said close monitoring will continue. Members of the public have been advised to remain alert, limit outdoor activities where possible, and follow official guidance until air quality levels return to safer ranges.
