President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has underscored the importance of energy security as a cornerstone of national development, calling for stronger collective action to advance the transition to clean energy.
The President made the remarks in a message shared on social media to mark the International Day of Clean Energy, where he emphasised that reliable and sustainable energy systems are essential for the country’s long-term progress.
According to President Muizzu, clean energy plays a critical role in addressing climate change and environmental degradation, while also supporting key sectors such as education, healthcare, and economic development. He noted that access to secure energy supplies directly strengthens public services and creates new opportunities for growth.
At the global level, the President highlighted the broader significance of environmentally friendly energy solutions, stating that clean energy is fundamental to building a healthier and more sustainable planet.
He said the current administration has already taken practical measures to enhance energy efficiency and expand renewable energy capacity, with strategies tailored to the Maldives’ unique geographical and environmental conditions.
President Muizzu also reiterated the government’s target of meeting 33 percent of the country’s electricity demand through renewable energy sources by the end of 2028.
Concluding his message, the President urged stakeholders and the wider public to work together to accelerate the shift towards clean energy, calling for bold and decisive action to safeguard the planet for future generations.
