No Threat to Fuel or Food Supplies Despite Middle East Conflict, President Says

President Mohamed Muizzu has reassured the public that the ongoing instability in the Middle East will not disrupt fuel or food supplies to the Maldives, stressing that contingency measures are already in place.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, the President said the Government has formed a Special Cabinet Committee to closely monitor developments and respond swiftly to any emerging risks. The committee, he explained, is tasked with assessing the broader implications of the conflict — from supply chains and trade routes to the welfare of Maldivians living or studying in affected countries.

President Muizzu acknowledged that the Middle East crisis carries potential economic implications, particularly for a country heavily reliant on imports and international connectivity. However, he maintained that the Government is actively working to cushion any negative fallout.

Special attention, he said, is being given to the tourism sector — the backbone of the Maldivian economy. Authorities are analysing possible disruptions to travel patterns and visitor flows while implementing measures to ensure the industry remains stable and resilient.

Addressing concerns about aviation disruptions, the President noted that flights passing through Middle Eastern airspace are being rerouted where necessary to ensure uninterrupted arrivals to the Maldives. Discussions with airlines and travel agents have resulted in alternative operational arrangements to maintain connectivity.

He further stated that new travel options are also being arranged for tourists departing the Maldives for Middle Eastern destinations, minimising inconvenience and ensuring smoother transit during this volatile period.

Beyond economic considerations, the Government is also keeping a close watch on the safety and well-being of Maldivians residing in the region, including students pursuing higher education. The Special Cabinet Committee is reportedly coordinating efforts to monitor conditions and provide assistance if required.

Reaffirming the administration’s stance, President Muizzu said the Government remains vigilant and proactive, prioritising both national economic stability and the protection of citizens abroad as the regional situation continues to evolve.
