Salary Structure Harmonised for Customs and Correctional Service Employees

The Maldivian government has implemented a new harmonised salary structure for employees of the Maldives Customs Service and the Maldives Correctional Service, as part of broader public sector pay reforms outlined in this year’s national budget.

The revised pay scheme took effect on 1 March, with staff in both agencies receiving salary increases under the updated framework.

Officials said the changes are guided by the National Pay Framework, developed by the National Pay Commission in line with the National Pay Policy Act.

The initiative forms part of the government’s wider pay harmonisation policy, which aims to standardise salary structures across different sectors of the public service.

Similar adjustments were introduced in 2025 for employees in the civil service and judicial sector, with President Mohamed Muizzu previously indicating that remaining government employees would be brought under the revised system in phases.

According to the Finance Ministry, the updated salary structure is designed to reduce reliance on overtime earnings by incorporating more stable income levels into base pay.

Authorities say the reform is expected to promote more efficient use of working hours while improving overall employee welfare.

The government believes the new structure will contribute to better work-life balance for employees, alongside more predictable income and improved job satisfaction.

Officials also noted that the changes are part of a broader effort to support a healthier and more productive workforce, while ensuring consistency and fairness in public sector compensation.

The harmonisation policy is expected to continue rolling out across other government institutions as part of ongoing reforms to modernise the country’s public service pay system.
