MTCC Begins Quay Wall Works as Boduthakurufaanu Magu Upgrade Gains Momentum

Malé, Maldives – The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has launched quay wall construction works along Boduthakurufaanu Magu, marking a major step forward in an ambitious project to modernise the capital’s coastal infrastructure.

The latest phase of work focuses on demolition and clearance of existing concrete structures near the jetty adjacent to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal. This stage forms part of a wider redevelopment plan covering Segments 2 to 5 of the project’s first phase.

According to MTCC, the current construction zone stretches approximately 700 metres, running from Izzuddin Jetty to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal. Within this area, around 610 metres of quay wall will be completely rebuilt, significantly improving coastal resilience and marine access.

Work is also progressing on the cross seawall, a key berthing point for vessels, extending toward Fishermen’s Park. Sheet piling operations—a crucial structural reinforcement process—are currently underway to strengthen the foundation for future development.

As part of the upgrade, Boduthakurufaanu Magu will be widened by an estimated two to three metres, improving traffic flow along one of Malé’s busiest corridors.

Once the structural works are completed, the area will be equipped with:

  • Modern asphalt road surfacing

  • Improved drainage systems

  • New pedestrian walkways

  • Upgraded street lighting

These enhancements are expected to deliver a safer, more efficient, and pedestrian-friendly environment for residents and commuters.

MTCC confirmed that the works are being carried out based on the same design framework used in the earlier completed segments of the project. To date, approximately 380 metres of the road, from Izzuddin Jetty to North Harbour, has already been successfully modernised.

Authorities also noted that Fishermen’s Park will remain unaffected during this phase of construction, ensuring continued public access to the area.

The Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project is one of the most significant urban infrastructure initiatives currently underway in Malé, aimed at enhancing coastal protection, easing congestion, and upgrading the city’s transport network.
