New Monument to Mark 100 Years of Majeedhiyaa School

Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development Ismail Shafeeu has announced that the government aims to complete and open a special centennial monument at Majeedhiyaa School next year, marking 100 years since the institution’s founding.

The minister made the remarks while addressing a special assembly held to commemorate the school’s 99th anniversary, where he attended as the chief guest.

Landmark Project Underway

Dr Shafeeu confirmed that work has already begun on the monument, which is being developed as a symbol of the school’s century-long contribution to education in the Maldives. He noted that land on the western side of the school has been reclaimed to facilitate the project.

He said the initiative is being carried out under the guidance of President Mohamed Muizzu, with the aim of unveiling the monument in time for the centennial celebrations.

New Facilities and Smart Classrooms Planned

In addition to the monument, plans are underway to further expand the school’s infrastructure. A new building featuring 40 classrooms is set to be constructed on land previously occupied by the former Dharumavantha School.

The facility is expected to introduce some of the country’s first smart classrooms, reflecting broader efforts to modernise teaching and learning environments.

Meanwhile, the historic Darul Uloom building — one of the oldest educational structures in the Maldives — is to be preserved and repurposed as an educational museum.

Focus on Quality Education and Character Development

During his address, the minister emphasised the importance of adapting to rapid global and technological changes, calling on Majeedhiyaa School to remain a leading example in the national education system.

He highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening both academic and personal development, including the introduction of the “Bingaa” programme — a character-building initiative designed to promote discipline, respect and strong values among students.

The government is also placing increased emphasis on life skills and vocational education, with new initiatives aimed at preparing students for a wider range of career pathways.

New Digital Platforms Launched

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the minister officially launched the school’s new website and YouTube channel, marking a step toward enhancing digital engagement with students and alumni.

The event was attended by current students as well as former students, reflecting the institution’s long-standing legacy.

A Century of Educational Heritage

Majeedhiyaa School traces its origins to 1927, when formal education in the Maldives began with the establishment of Madrassat-ul Saniyya under the leadership of Sultan Mohamed Shamsuddeen III. The school was later renamed Madrassat-ul Majeedhiyaa in 1947.

From an initial intake of just 69 students, the school has grown into one of the country’s leading educational institutions, now serving more than 1,300 students. It was also the first school in the Maldives to introduce an international curriculum.

After decades as an all-boys institution, Majeedhiyaa transitioned to co-education in 2011 and continues to provide both primary and secondary education.

Officials say the upcoming centennial milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on the school’s historical significance while positioning it for future growth.
