President Mohamed Muizzu has described the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) as the country’s foremost institution for safeguarding its people, as the Maldives marked the 134th anniversary of its armed forces.
In a message shared to commemorate Army Day, the President highlighted the long history of the military, paying tribute to those who have served and sacrificed in defence of the nation.
Tribute to Service and Sacrifice
Muizzu said the legacy of the Maldivian military is shaped by the contributions of generations of servicemen, including those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
He noted that the MNDF continues to play a central role in protecting national security and responding to threats, describing it as the most capable force entrusted with ensuring the safety of citizens.
The President also extended appreciation to military personnel for their continuous service, acknowledging their work both day and night, and conveyed greetings to soldiers and their families on the occasion.
Army Day Observed Nationwide
Army Day is observed annually on April 21, marking the official commencement of the country’s military service.
Celebrations this year began with a flag-hoisting ceremony, with events taking place across the Maldives to mark the milestone.
Events Planned in Coming Weeks
A series of commemorative activities are scheduled in the weeks ahead, including a military parade in Malé on May 2.
The main official ceremony is set to be held on the evening of May 9, bringing together senior government officials and military leadership.
During the event, recognition will be given to members of the MNDF who have demonstrated outstanding service, as well as civilians who have contributed to supporting the force.
Officials say the anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the role of the military while honouring those who continue to serve the country.
