President Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his commitment to improving the welfare of soldiers and their families, stating that ensuring proper support and entitlements for military personnel remains a key responsibility of his administration.
He made the remarks during a ceremony marking the 134th anniversary of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), where he praised the institution’s role in safeguarding the nation’s independence and sovereignty.
Describing the MNDF as one of the country’s most respected institutions, the President said ongoing efforts to strengthen the force will continue, with a focus on both operational capacity and personnel welfare.
Among the initiatives outlined was the development of command centres across the country, which would allow soldiers to be stationed closer to their families. To support this, the size of the military is expected to increase, with budget provisions already allocated and implementation underway.
The President also acknowledged the need for reforms within MNDF regulations, indicating plans to review policies related to rank structures, career progression, and continued service for long-serving personnel. Changes to retirement rules are also under consideration.
Addressing housing concerns, Muizzu emphasized that access to housing is a fundamental right and said military personnel would benefit from expanded opportunities under the government’s housing policy. He announced that construction of a modern housing project at the Bandeyri Koshi Barracks area is expected to begin within the next eight months.
Further development plans include upgrades to Girifushi, the MNDF’s primary training island, as well as the expansion of training facilities in both the northern and southern regions of the country. The President also pledged to increase opportunities for overseas training to enhance the skills of MNDF personnel.
He noted that all planned initiatives would be implemented in a sustainable manner, with the aim of building a stronger and more capable defence force while improving the quality of life for those who serve.
