Maldives, Saudi Arabia discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation

The governments of the Maldives and Saudi Arabia have held discussions aimed at further strengthening the long-standing relationship between the two countries, following a high-level telephone conversation between their foreign ministers.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussions took place during a courtesy phone call between Maldives Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam and Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.

The ministry said both sides reflected on the close and longstanding ties shared by the Maldives and Saudi Arabia, while also exchanging views on ways to further deepen cooperation between the two nations.

During the conversation, Minister Iruthisham expressed appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s continued contributions to the Maldives’ development across various sectors. She also thanked the Saudi government for including the Maldives in the Makkah Route Initiative, which has significantly streamlined travel procedures for Maldivian Hajj pilgrims.

The Foreign Minister additionally acknowledged the services and assistance provided to Maldivian pilgrims during Hajj, as well as the hospitality extended to Maldivian delegations during official bilateral visits to Saudi Arabia.

The ministry said the discussions also touched on broader regional matters, with Minister Iruthisham reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to supporting regional peace and security through dialogue, cooperation, and joint engagement with partner countries.

The Maldives and Saudi Arabia maintain close diplomatic and religious ties, with cooperation spanning areas including Islamic affairs, infrastructure development, education, and pilgrimage services.
