The Ministry of Education Higher Education and Skills Development has opened applications for the June intake of A-Level studies in government schools across the Maldives.
According to the ministry, students eligible for higher secondary education can submit applications until 28 May. The intake is open to students who have completed their O-Level education and meet the required academic criteria for admission into Grades 11 and 12.
The ministry stated that A-Level programmes in government schools are generally available to students aged 16 or below by the end of 2025. However, students who completed Grade 10 through the formal school system and qualify for Grade 11 will still be eligible for enrolment even if they exceed the standard age limit, provided they are under the age of 18.
Admission eligibility will be determined based on results from examinations including SSC, GCE O-Level, IGCSE, and BTEC. Students who have passed between three and five subjects will qualify for A-Level placement.
The ministry also noted that students studying under the Individual Curriculum Plan (ICP) may apply if they have obtained at least a grade “C” in two subjects.
Parents are expected to begin receiving placement information from 25 May, with registration details to be communicated directly by the schools where students are assigned.
As part of efforts to expand access to higher secondary education outside the capital, the government has introduced a pilot A-Level programme in 23 schools across islands beyond Malé.
The ministry said the initiative has already led to a significant rise in enrolment, with the number of students pursuing A-Level studies in government schools increasing by 77 percent compared to the previous year.
The expansion forms part of broader efforts to improve access to post-secondary education opportunities across the country and reduce the need for students to relocate to Malé for higher secondary studies.
