The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has elected Supreme Court Justice Al-Ustaz Hussain Shaheed as its new Vice-President following the resignation of former officeholder Yazmeed Mohamed.
Justice Shaheed was selected to the position during a meeting of the commission, filling a key leadership role within the constitutional body responsible for overseeing the administration of the judiciary and matters relating to judges.
His appointment comes as the JSC continues its work in supervising judicial conduct, handling disciplinary matters, and ensuring the effective functioning of the Maldivian court system.
Justice Shaheed currently serves as a member of the commission as the representative elected by the Supreme Court. Under the Maldives’ constitutional framework, the Chief Justice and one additional judge elected by the Supreme Court serve on the JSC, alongside representatives from several state institutions and branches of government.
The Judicial Service Commission is currently headed by Al-Ustaz Husnee Mubarak and consists of 10 members drawn from different sectors of the state to ensure independent oversight of the judiciary.
Established under the Constitution, the JSC is tasked with appointing, promoting, transferring and disciplining judges, while also working to uphold judicial independence and accountability. The commission plays a central role in safeguarding public confidence in the justice system and ensuring that judicial officers maintain the standards expected of the profession.
Justice Shaheed has served in the Maldivian judiciary for several years and is regarded as one of the senior members of the country’s legal community. His election to the post of Vice-President places him in a prominent leadership position within the commission at a time when judicial reform and institutional strengthening continue to be important areas of discussion within the legal sector.
The election follows the resignation of Yazmeed Mohamed from the vice-presidential position, creating a vacancy that required the commission to appoint a new officeholder from among its members.
With Justice Shaheed now assuming the role, the commission is expected to continue its ongoing work overseeing the judiciary and addressing matters related to judicial administration across the country.
