President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has extended congratulations to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he became India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in terms of consecutive days in office.
In a message shared on social media, President Muizzu described the achievement as a significant milestone and conveyed his warm wishes to the Indian leader.
“Warm congratulations to His Excellency Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister by consecutive days in office,” the President said.
The President also highlighted the close relationship between the Maldives and India, expressing confidence that cooperation between the two countries will continue to grow in the years ahead.
“The Maldives looks forward to further strengthening cooperation with India, guided by mutual respect, sovereign equality and shared interests,” he added.
Modi, who first assumed office in May 2014, has now surpassed previous records for uninterrupted service by an elected Indian Prime Minister, marking a major moment in India’s political history.
The congratulatory message comes at a time when the Maldives and India are celebrating 60 years of diplomatic relations. Established in 1965, bilateral ties between the two countries have expanded significantly over the decades, covering areas such as trade, infrastructure development, healthcare, education, security and people-to-people exchanges.
Relations between Malé and New Delhi have also seen increased engagement in recent years through a series of high-level visits and cooperation agreements.
Since assuming office, President Muizzu has undertaken an official visit to India, while Prime Minister Modi paid a state visit to the Maldives at the invitation of the President. The visits were viewed as important steps in strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between the neighboring countries.
One of the key outcomes of recent engagements has been the decision to begin discussions on a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the Maldives and India. The two countries have already signed the Terms of Reference (TOR) required to initiate formal negotiations on the agreement.
Officials from both countries have stated that the proposed FTA is expected to open new opportunities for trade, investment and economic cooperation while further strengthening bilateral relations.
India remains one of the Maldives’ closest regional partners and has played a significant role in supporting development projects across the country. Cooperation between the two nations continues in areas ranging from infrastructure and connectivity to capacity building and economic development.
President Muizzu’s message reflects the Maldives’ continued commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic ties with India while advancing cooperation based on mutual benefit and respect for sovereignty.
As both countries commemorate six decades of diplomatic relations this year, leaders from Malé and New Delhi have repeatedly emphasized the importance of deepening engagement and expanding collaboration in areas of shared interest.
