Long-Awaited PayPal Service Goes Live in Maldives

The Maldives has officially joined the global PayPal network, marking a major step forward in the country’s digital transformation and expanding access to international online payment services for individuals, freelancers and businesses.

The long-awaited service was launched by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during a special ceremony held at Barceló Nasandhura, bringing one of the world’s most widely used online payment platforms to the Maldives for the first time.

The introduction of PayPal is expected to significantly improve access to global financial services for Maldivians engaged in cross-border business activities, particularly freelancers, entrepreneurs, content creators and small and medium-sized enterprises that rely on international transactions.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, PayPal Vice President and General Manager Amir Villani described the milestone as an important development for the Maldives’ growing digital economy. He said the platform would help connect local individuals and businesses with trusted international financial services while creating new opportunities to participate in the global marketplace.

According to Villani, broader access to international payment solutions will enable Maldivians to engage more easily in global commerce, strengthening the country’s integration into the digital economy and opening doors to new sources of income and business growth.

Ooredoo Maldives Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Shadi Qawasmi also welcomed the launch, describing it as another important step in the company’s efforts to introduce internationally recognized digital services to the local market.

He noted that Ooredoo has continued to invest in digital innovation and connectivity, with the goal of creating greater opportunities for customers and supporting the growth of the Maldives’ digital ecosystem.

The launch follows months of technical preparations and regulatory work. In October 2025, the Maldives Monetary Authority granted an inward remittance licence to Techfin Maldives, a subsidiary of Ooredoo Maldives, paving the way for the introduction of the service.

Following the licensing process, extensive testing and system integration work were carried out earlier this year before the platform became operational.

The arrival of PayPal follows sustained efforts by the government to bring the service to the Maldives. The initiative was first announced in 2024 as part of broader plans to modernize the country’s digital financial infrastructure and improve access to international payment networks.

For years, the absence of PayPal had been a major challenge for many Maldivians working online, forcing freelancers and businesses to rely on alternative payment channels that were often more costly or less convenient.

The launch is expected to complement other digital finance initiatives currently underway, including the expansion of e-wallet services and efforts to strengthen the country’s digital economy framework.

Industry observers say the introduction of PayPal could provide a significant boost to the Maldives’ growing freelance and technology sectors by making it easier for local professionals and businesses to receive payments from overseas clients and customers.

With the service now officially available, many see the launch as the beginning of a new chapter for digital commerce in the Maldives, bringing the country closer to the global financial ecosystem.
