The government has decided not to hold the official Independence Day reception this year, marking the second consecutive year the event has been cancelled as part of efforts to reduce public expenditure.
Despite the cancellation of the reception, the official state ceremony commemorating the Maldives’ Independence Day will go ahead as planned.
According to the President’s Office, the national ceremony will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Independence Day at the Social Centre in Malé. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is expected to deliver the official Independence Day address during the event.
The annual reception, which traditionally brings together senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, political leaders and invited guests, was also omitted from last year’s Independence Day programme following a decision by the administration to curb state spending.
While the reception will not take place, the official ceremony will continue to serve as the country’s principal event marking the anniversary of the Maldives’ independence from British protectorate status on 26 July 1965.
Independence Day is one of the Maldives’ most significant national occasions and is observed each year with state ceremonies, flag-raising events and tributes to those who contributed to the country’s independence.
The government has not announced any changes to the official ceremony, which is expected to proceed with the President’s address highlighting the significance of the occasion and the country’s progress.
