According to the President’s Office, the two heads of state also reaffirmed their shared commitment to further strengthening the longstanding ties between the Maldives and Qatar.

The President’s Office said the visit underscored the importance the Maldives places on its close friendship with Qatar, a country that has maintained strong diplomatic and development cooperation with the Maldives for decades.

The late Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani played a significant role in supporting several initiatives in the Maldives during his tenure. Among the notable projects associated with his support are the introduction of Qatar Airways services to the Maldives, the establishment of Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani School in Laamu Atoll, and the construction of Masjid Al Sheikh Qasim bin Al Thani in Hulhumalé.

The Maldives and Qatar established diplomatic relations on 26 May 1984, and cooperation between the two nations has since expanded across a range of sectors, including education, infrastructure, aviation and development assistance.

The President’s visit reflects the close bilateral relationship between the two countries and the Maldives’ commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic engagement with Qatar during a period of national mourning.
