The Maldives has welcomed the United States’ decision to remove Syria from its list of State Sponsors of Terrorism, expressing hope that the move will support the country’s recovery and reconstruction after years of conflict.
In a statement, the Maldivian government congratulated the government and people of Syria on the development and expressed hope that the decision would help strengthen international efforts to rebuild the country and improve the living conditions and well-being of the Syrian people.
The decision follows a proposal submitted to the US Congress by President Donald Trump on July 8. Syria’s removal took effect following the completion of the required 45-day congressional review period.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the decision recognised measures taken under President Ahmed al-Sharaa to distance Syria from terrorism and move the country in a new direction.
The Maldives also reaffirmed its support for Syria’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. The government reiterated its backing for an inclusive and peaceful political process that is led and owned by Syrians and capable of fulfilling the aspirations of the country’s people.
Syria had been designated by the United States as a State Sponsor of Terrorism since 1979, during the presidency of Hafez al-Assad. The designation remained in place throughout the rule of his son, Bashar al-Assad.
The country’s political landscape changed dramatically in December 2024 when opposition forces led by al-Sharaa ousted Assad, ending more than five decades of Assad family rule.
Following the change in government, the United States began reassessing sanctions and other restrictions imposed on Syria, as the new authorities sought greater international recognition and support for reconstruction.
Removal from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list eases a significant barrier to Syria’s reintegration into the international economy. The designation had carried restrictions affecting foreign assistance, defence-related transactions and financial dealings, while also complicating engagement by international banks and investors.
Washington has also removed Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, previously led by al-Sharaa, from its list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations. The group emerged from the former al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra Front before publicly breaking ties with al-Qaeda.
The developments come as Syria’s new authorities seek international assistance to rebuild infrastructure and revive an economy severely affected by years of war and international sanctions.
The Maldives said it hopes the latest US decision will contribute to those efforts while helping create conditions for greater stability and prosperity for the Syrian people.
