Parliament makes latest financial declarations of MPs public

The People’s Majlis has made public the latest financial declarations submitted by lawmakers, with 91 members filing their statements for the latest reporting period.
Members of the 20th Parliament are required to submit annual financial statements by August 31 under the Standing Orders of the People’s Majlis. The latest disclosures mark the second round of financial declarations submitted by lawmakers elected to the current parliamentary term.
The statements have now been published for public access as part of Parliament’s financial transparency requirements.
Of the 93 lawmakers required to submit declarations for the period, 91 filed their statements by the deadline.
Machangolhi North MP Ibrahim Mohamed and Naifaru MP Yaseen Abdulla did not submit their financial statements within the stipulated period.
The annual declarations provide information about the financial interests of lawmakers, including assets, property and other financial holdings. The requirement is intended to provide greater transparency over the financial positions and interests of elected representatives while they hold public office.
Former Hithadhoo North MP Mohamed Sinan also submitted his second financial statement despite no longer serving in Parliament.
Sinan lost his parliamentary seat in April following a Supreme Court ruling. However, as he had served as an MP during the period covered by the latest disclosure requirement, he was still required to submit a financial statement.
The Hithadhoo North seat was subsequently filled through a by-election, with Abdulla Sodiq elected as the constituency’s new representative.
Sodiq took his oath of office on June 15 and was not required to file a financial statement for the latest reporting period because he had only recently assumed office.
Under parliamentary rules, financial disclosure is mandatory for lawmakers and forms part of measures intended to increase accountability and allow greater public scrutiny of MPs’ financial interests.
Members who fail to submit their statements within the prescribed period can be directed to comply with the requirement, with parliamentary rules providing for further measures when declarations remain outstanding.
The 20th People’s Majlis began its five-year term in May 2024 following the parliamentary election held in April that year.
