More than 100,000 German tourists have visited the Maldives so far this year, keeping Germany firmly among the country’s largest and most important tourism markets.
Figures from the Ministry of Tourism show that 101,366 visitors have arrived from Germany in 2026, placing the European nation fourth among the Maldives’ leading source markets.
Germany has maintained a strong presence in the Maldivian tourism industry for decades, particularly within the resort sector, and remains one of the country’s most significant European markets.
Last year, 167,822 German tourists travelled to the Maldives, making Germany one of the leading contributors to the country’s record tourism performance.
Efforts are now underway to further increase arrivals from the market, with the Maldives seeking to strengthen its partnerships with German tour operators and travel industry stakeholders.
One of the most significant initiatives was launched in February, when Visit Maldives Corporation signed a Memorandum of Understanding with DERTOUR Deutschland during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s official visit to Germany.
The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the Maldives-Germany Business Roundtable in Berlin and established a joint framework for promoting the Maldives to German travellers.
Under the partnership, Visit Maldives and DERTOUR agreed to work towards generating at least 100,000 German tourist arrivals annually, with an ambition to push the number beyond 200,000 in the following year.
The collaboration includes joint destination marketing campaigns, engagement with the German travel trade and promotional activities designed around consumer preferences and seasonal travel patterns in the market.
Germany is part of a wider European market that continues to provide a substantial share of visitors to the Maldives. European countries collectively accounted for around 59 percent of tourist arrivals in 2025, underlining the region’s continued importance to the industry.
Germany’s position also comes amid strong competition among the Maldives’ largest tourism markets.
China currently leads tourist arrivals this year with 308,913 visitors, according to the figures provided by the Tourism Ministry.
Russia follows with 232,676 arrivals, while the United Kingdom ranks third with 121,239 tourists.
Germany’s 101,366 arrivals place it immediately behind the UK and ahead of the Maldives’ other major international source markets.
Overall, around 1.6 million tourists have visited the Maldives so far this year as the country continues towards its annual tourism targets.
Of those visitors, approximately one million stayed at tourist resorts, highlighting the continued dominance of the traditional resort model within the industry.
Guesthouses, however, continue to account for a substantial share of visitors as tourism expands across inhabited islands. Ministry statistics show that 349,861 tourists have stayed at guesthouses so far this year.
The Maldives crossed the one-million-tourist mark for 2026 in June, despite disruptions to international aviation and geopolitical uncertainty affecting major travel corridors earlier in the year.
The government has set a target of attracting 2.5 million tourists during 2026, while Visit Maldives continues marketing campaigns across both established and emerging source markets.
For Germany, the focus is increasingly on strengthening an already established relationship rather than building a new market, with partnerships such as the DERTOUR agreement aimed at turning consistently strong German demand into further growth over the coming years.
