Capital Marine And Civil Construction Company (CMC) has announced plans to recommence dredging operations for Hulhumale Phase 3 land reclamation project starting next week. This decision comes after a temporary suspension ordered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which halted all dredging activities.
Initially launched in last year September, the dredging works were temporarily halted after EPA issued directives suspending all dredging activities as a precautionary measure due to the issues of coral bleaching. However, CMC has now confirmed that necessary preparations have been completed and work is set to resume early next week.
Under the ambitious project, CMC intends to dredge a total of 63 hectares across three designated areas. Currently, 10 hectares of the first area and 13 hectares of the second area have already been successfully dredged. The company now focuses on dredging the remaining 16 hectares of the second area and the entire 24 hectares allocated for the third phase.
Despite initial progress, CMC acknowledges potential delays in completing the third phase as anticipated, citing operational challenges encountered during the execution of the project.

As part of precautionary measures, Hulhumale Development Corporation (HDC) has issued a deadline to for the removal of vessels within the costal vicinity of the reclaimed land. In a public notice issued by HDC, it has been stipulated that the vessels must be relocated before 12 pm on June 25th. Furthermore, HDC has installed a red silt screen to mark out the restricted area, prohibiting the entry of vessels north of this boundary.
Both CMC and HDC they remain committed to completing the Hulhumale Phase 3 land reclamation project in accordance with environmental guidelines and anticipates minimal disruption as operations resume next week.
