In a significant development, FIFA has imposed a nine-month suspension on Bassam Adeel Jaleel, President of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM). The decision, handed down by the FIFA Ethics Committee following directives from the Investigative Chamber, comes amidst serious allegations of corruption and money laundering against Bassam.
The Investigative Chamber’s action stems from charges filed against Bassam by the Prosecutor General’s Office of Maldives. These charges, relating to financial misconduct, prompted FIFA to initiate its own investigation in collaboration with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
According to FIFA’s official statement, their investigation uncovered substantial irregularities allegedly involving Bassam misappropriating FIFA funds for personal gain. As a consequence of these findings, Bassam has been formally notified of his suspension from all football-related activities.
