Maldives Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has emphasized the importance of tailored development strategies and international collaboration during his address at the 2024 Interregional Seminar on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Parliaments of Developing Countries in Beijing, China.
Addressing representatives from across the globe, Speaker Abdul Raheem highlighted the unique challenges faced by small island nations like the Maldives in the context of global economic integration. He stressed that any approach to economic globalization must account for these distinct circumstances, ensuring that each nation’s resources and hurdles are recognized and addressed.
The Speaker drew a strong connection between the Maldives’ economic strategies and its commitment to sustainability and democratic values. Referencing President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s earlier remarks at the International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Abdul Raheem reiterated that sustainability is not just a policy but a core element of the Maldivian identity. He argued that resilience in the face of global challenges is essential for the nation’s continued prosperity.
In a call for broader international cooperation, Speaker Abdul Raheem advocated for a model of globalization that is both inclusive and sustainable. He underscored the Maldives’ ongoing commitment to forging strong partnerships with countries like China, aiming to secure a future that balances economic growth with environmental stewardship.
The seminar, taking place from August 18 to 23, has gathered parliamentary representatives from various developing nations to discuss strategies for achieving the SDGs. The event serves as a platform for exchanging ideas and forging new alliances in the pursuit of shared development goals.
Joining Speaker Abdul Raheem on this official visit are MPs Ibrahim Shujau (Baarashu Constituency), Mohamed Ismail (Villimale Constituency), Mohamed Shahid (Hulhudhoo Constituency), and the Secretary General of the People’s Majlis, Fathimath Niusha. The delegation’s itinerary also included a visit to the Museum of the Communist Party of China, where they engaged in cultural exchanges and explored China’s historical milestones.
