Custodians of the Ocean: First Lady Urges Personal Responsibility

At the closing ceremony of the ASF Asian Surfing Championships 2024, First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed underscored the pressing need to protect the oceans for the benefit of future generations of surfers. Her remarks highlighted the delicate balance between celebrating the sport of surfing and acknowledging the responsibility to safeguard the marine environment.

The First Lady spoke passionately about the role of surfers and communities as guardians of the ocean, emphasizing that climate change threatens not only the waves that surfers cherish but also marine ecosystems and coastal livelihoods. She reiterated her commitment to reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable practices to preserve the ocean’s health.

Madam Sajidha also celebrated the spirit of the championship, calling it a testament to skill, passion, and camaraderie among participants. She extended her congratulations to the champions, noting that their victories are a source of national pride and reflect their dedication and hard work. The First Lady praised all competitors for their courage and determination, highlighting how their performances have inspired others through sportsmanship and unity.

The ASF Asian Surfing Championships 2024, hosted on Thulusdhoo Island in Kaafu Atoll, saw 113 athletes from 20 countries compete. This event, the second of its kind held in the Maldives, also served as a qualifying round for the upcoming Asian Games, marking the first time surfing has been included as a competitive sport in the Games.

The Maldivian surfing teams made a strong showing at the championship, securing top rankings in both the male and female categories for the South Asia region. The men’s team also achieved an impressive fourth place overall in Asia, earning slots for the 2026 Asian Games.
