Police Launch Special Operation to Enhance Road Safety Amid Rising Accidents

Police have initiated a special operation aimed at improving road safety and security, following a rise in accidents across the city. As part of this effort, vehicle checkpoints have been established in various locations, where inspections will be carried out to ensure compliance with safety regulations.

In a post on X, the police announced that the operation is not only focused on enforcement but also on raising public awareness about road safety. They are urging all vehicle users to adhere to safety measures and be vigilant while on the roads.

The operation comes in response to the recent surge in traffic accidents, some of which have had fatal outcomes. Just last week, two young men tragically lost their lives in separate accidents in Malé and Hulhumalé, adding to growing concerns about road safety.

Police statistics reveal a troubling trend, with 1,907 accidents reported in the past six months. In July alone, there were 210 accidents, and the number slightly increased to 204 in August. Many of these incidents have involved high-speed vehicles, leading to public outcry and calls for stricter regulations on racing and drifting activities.

In response to the public’s concerns, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has introduced stringent measures. One of the key actions taken was the revocation of permits previously issued by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) for racing and drifting activities in Hulhumalé. This decision followed a fatal accident involving a speeding sports car, further highlighting the need for stricter road safety enforcement.

The police operation is expected to continue in the coming weeks, with a focus on both enforcement and education to reduce the number of accidents and ensure safer roads for all.
