The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has announced that it is providing humanitarian assistance to 37 individuals affected by a fire that broke out in Male’ City yesterday.
The fire erupted in the kitchen of Gaamagu Café, located at the end of Sosun Magu, around midday. Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze by 4:30 pm. However, the building, constructed largely of tin and wood, continued to smolder, requiring ongoing monitoring.
The fire caused significant damage to the three-story Gaamagu Café building, which housed both the café on the ground floor and an accommodation block for expatriate workers on the upper levels. The upper floors, built with corrugated metal sheets, have been deemed unusable following the incident.
While no injuries were reported, two foreign nationals in the vicinity of the fire were taken to the hospital for treatment. The adjacent house was also impacted by the blaze.
The NDMA confirmed that of the 37 individuals affected, 22 are locals and 15 are foreigners. The authority is actively working to provide the necessary aid and support to those displaced by the fire.
