President Dr Muizzu Departs New York After Concluding 79th UNGA Session

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has concluded his official visit to New York after attending the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The President departed the city on Saturday following a series of high-profile engagements and addresses during his time at the international event.

During the visit, President Muizzu delivered a key statement at the General Debate of UNGA 79, where he outlined pressing global issues such as climate change, the renewable energy transition, socio-economic challenges, and the importance of digitalisation for developing countries. His address called for a united global effort to tackle the urgent threat of climate change, particularly for vulnerable nations like the Maldives.

In a historic moment for the Maldives, President Muizzu became the first Maldivian head of state to address the United Nations Security Council in the 59 years since the nation became a member of the UN. His speech highlighted the need for significant reforms to the Security Council, including the call to abolish veto power for permanent members. The President stressed the importance of upholding international law and ensuring justice for all nations, particularly in the context of ongoing global conflicts.

Alongside his participation in the General Debate, President Muizzu co-chaired various sideline events, where he reiterated the Maldives’ commitment to renewable energy development and enhancing climate resilience. The President called for increased international investment in ocean current energy and novel renewable technologies, presenting the Maldives as a key partner in sustainable energy initiatives.

Dr. Muizzu also held multiple high-level bilateral meetings with heads of delegations, including one with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. These discussions covered areas of mutual interest, including development cooperation, climate finance, and enhancing diplomatic relations.

During his visit, the President took time to meet with the Maldivian community living in New York.

Moreover, Dr. Muizzu delivered a lecture at Princeton University as part of the prestigious “Dean’s Leadership Series” at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, where he discussed the Maldives’ efforts to address global issues such as sustainability and economic challenges. The President also toured the Google office in New York, exploring innovations in digital technology that could benefit the Maldives’ development goals.

The President’s visit to New York has been marked as a significant milestone in strengthening the Maldives’ role on the global stage, particularly in advocating for climate action, international reform, and sustainable development.
