In a statement commemorating Maldivian Victory Day, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced a comprehensive plan to expand the operational capabilities of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). Highlighting the need for a stronger and more resilient military, he outlined initiatives aimed at bolstering national security through modernized training, improved facilities, and international cooperation.
President Muizzu emphasized his administration’s commitment to national defense, stating that efforts to increase the MNDF’s capacity and fortify the Ministry of Defense are essential for safeguarding the Maldives’ sovereignty and independence. A central part of this vision includes a nationwide youth training program to prepare the next generation of Maldivians to serve their country.
The President revealed plans for a major upgrade to the Girifushi training facility, with 13 hectares of land to be reclaimed for expansion. This development will incorporate shoreline fortifications and the construction of a new port to support training operations. Muizzu stated that such initiatives fall under the government’s New Policy Initiatives, demonstrating the administration’s focus on robust defense infrastructure.
Beyond facilities, Muizzu committed to equipping the military with modern weaponry, noting ongoing discussions with allied nations for the procurement of advanced arms. A significant portion of the upcoming year’s budget will be allocated to defense, including provisions for new arms and technologies.
President Muizzu underscored the importance of strengthening the Coast Guard, referencing the recent induction of the Special Boat Squadron as a pivotal step. The Coast Guard fleet, now fully in charge of the strategic Kandu Oy Giri region, will double under a planned enhancement program aimed at securing the Maldives’ extensive territorial waters. Additionally, Muizzu highlighted the establishment of the MNDF Air Corps and the introduction of UAV technology, which will enhance the monitoring and protection of the Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
With the support of international partners, the President assured that MNDF stations across the Maldives would receive necessary upgrades to handle emerging security challenges. This comprehensive initiative underscores the President’s dedication to building a resilient defense force that can effectively safeguard the nation’s sovereignty in the face of both local and global challenges.
