President Muizzu Calls for Reparations to Palestine Following Gaza Ceasefire

Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has urged Israel to pay reparations to Palestine, following the announcement of a ceasefire agreement that ends 15 months of conflict in Gaza.

In a statement shared on social media, President Muizzu expressed relief over the ceasefire, calling for international efforts to ensure its continuation. He emphasized the need to enable displaced Palestinians to return to their homes and facilitate access to essential humanitarian aid.

“We are relieved to hear that a ceasefire deal has been reached after 15 months of genocidal war in Gaza,” the President stated. “The Maldives expresses its profound appreciation to the countries that have facilitated this agreement.”

Highlighting the devastation in Gaza, President Muizzu called for reparations, stating, “We call on Israel to pay reparations to Palestine.” He also urged the global community to contribute to rebuilding efforts in the region.

The ceasefire agreement, brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, was reached after extensive mediation. The deal includes a six-week initial truce, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and provisions for hostages held by both sides to be released.

The conflict has left tens of thousands dead in Gaza, with significant destruction to the territory. The Israeli invasion of Gaza was initiated after Hamas-led gunmen launched an attack on Israeli communities near the border on October 7, 2023, resulting in 1,200 Israeli deaths and the abduction of over 250 hostages, according to Israeli sources.

As the ceasefire takes effect, international attention turns to supporting Gaza’s reconstruction and addressing the humanitarian crisis in the region. President Muizzu’s call for reparations adds to the growing global demands for accountability and justice in the aftermath of the conflict.
