Brief Power Outage in Malé Resolved After Technical Glitch at Powerhouse

A city-wide power outage that struck Malé on Saturday night was swiftly resolved after technical issues at a local powerhouse led to the shutdown of generators, according to officials from the State Electric Company (STELCO).

The blackout, which began at approximately 11:30 pm, left residents of the capital without power for around 30 minutes. In a statement posted on social media platform X at 12:17 am, STELCO explained that a technical malfunction at the powerhouse caused the generators to shut down unexpectedly, triggering the outage.

STELCO confirmed that the generators have since been brought back online. At the time of the update, power had been restored to roughly 75 percent of Malé, with crews working diligently to reestablish full service to the remainder of the city.

“We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this disruption and are taking all necessary steps to ensure a quick resolution,” STELCO stated.

Local residents expressed relief as power was gradually restored across Malé. STELCO officials are reportedly reviewing the incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future, ensuring the reliability of the city’s electrical infrastructure.
