With the upcoming opening of the new international passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), discussions have been held to ensure efficient traffic flow and improved transport infrastructure around the airport.
The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which operates VIA, recently held a meeting to discuss key traffic management changes that will be implemented to accommodate the expansion of airport facilities.
According to the Transport Ministry, the meeting with MACL officials focused on several adjustments, including:
- Revised taxi queuing arrangements
- Changes to designated routes for taxis and four-wheelers
- Allocating new parking areas for additional vehicles
- Integration of a newly planned roundabout to enhance traffic circulation
The government is taking a proactive approach to managing increased passenger movement, ensuring a smooth travel experience for both local and international visitors.
The new international terminal, which will be equipped with modern facilities and advanced services, is now in its final stages of completion. In his Presidential Address at the opening session of Parliament, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu confirmed that the terminal is set to be operational before October 2025.
The existing terminal at VIA has a capacity of 1.5 million passengers annually, but with the completion of the new 78,000-square-meter terminal, the airport will be able to accommodate up to 7 million passengers per year.
As one of the most significant aviation projects in the country, the new terminal is expected to elevate the Maldives’ standing as a global travel hub. The ongoing traffic management discussions highlight the government’s commitment to improving airport services, ensuring seamless access to the country’s primary gateway for international travel.
With the aviation sector playing a crucial role in supporting tourism and economic growth, the development of VIA’s infrastructure reflects the government’s dedication to enhancing transport connectivity and delivering an upgraded travel experience for all passengers.
