Maldives in Talks with TikTok to Enable Monetisation for Local Creators

The Maldivian government has initiated discussions with TikTok to enable in-country monetisation on the platform, in a move aimed at boosting the local digital economy and empowering content creators.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade confirmed that a high-level meeting was held on Sunday with a senior delegation from TikTok to explore possible collaborations. The meeting focused on expanding revenue-generating opportunities for Maldivian users on the globally popular video-sharing app.

The ministry highlighted that this initiative aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s broader commitment to building a vibrant creative economy in the Maldives. “We are actively working on digital monetisation collaborations with TikTok,” the post stated, adding that the government sees immense potential in supporting creative professionals through such partnerships.

Currently, Maldivian creators can earn through limited features on the platform, such as the TikTok Creator Fund and live-streaming gifts. However, the latest move could pave the way for broader monetisation tools—including ad revenue sharing and brand partnerships—if successfully implemented.

TikTok, which boasts over a billion users worldwide, has emerged as a major platform for creative expression and digital entrepreneurship. The potential expansion of monetisation options in the Maldives is expected to encourage more youth and content creators to pursue digital careers, tapping into a global market from within the island nation.

Officials have not yet confirmed a timeline for when full monetisation features will be available to Maldivian users, but the ministry signaled optimism about the outcome of the talks.
