The Maldives and China have signed eleven agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), marking a new chapter in their longstanding partnership. The agreements were signed at a group ceremony held at the Wangfujing Hilton Hotel in Beijing on 2 September, witnessed by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The wide-ranging accords cover areas such as capacity building, economic development, infrastructure, and renewable energy. Officials noted that the initiatives are designed to strengthen bilateral cooperation while advancing sustainable development and creating long-term opportunities for both nations.
In his remarks at the ceremony, President Muizzu highlighted the importance of deepening ties with China, describing the agreements as “practical steps” toward realising shared goals of prosperity and resilience. He added that the Maldives values its relationship with China, which has historically played a vital role in supporting infrastructure growth and national development.
The new agreements also reflect China’s continued engagement with the Maldives through strategic cooperation in emerging fields such as renewable energy, which is expected to contribute significantly to the island nation’s sustainability efforts.
President Muizzu is currently in China on an official visit at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. During his trip, he is also participating in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, where leaders are meeting to discuss global peace, security, and development priorities.
