Maldives Introduces First Certificate Course in Sign Language

The Maldives has launched its first-ever certificate-level course in sign language, a milestone in efforts to make communication more inclusive for the hearing-impaired community.

The programme, offered by the Maldives National University (MNU) in partnership with the Ministry of Social and Family Development, runs for six months and is open to applicants aged 18 and above. To qualify, candidates must have completed their GCSE or hold a Level 2 qualification.

Officials say the initiative is designed to expand opportunities for individuals to formally learn sign language and, in turn, help bridge communication gaps across Maldivian society.

The new certificate course builds on earlier training initiatives rolled out by the Ministry. Recently, an online sign language programme was conducted for employees of government offices and private companies, equipping them with skills to better serve hearing-impaired clients. More than 130 participants successfully completed that training.

In addition, the Ministry is preparing to introduce an advanced online sign language programme, furthering its long-term strategy to promote inclusivity and familiarise the wider public with sign language use.

Advocates have welcomed the move as a crucial step in making essential services, education, and workplace environments more accessible for people with hearing impairments.
