A colourful children’s evening was held at Usfasgandu, Malé, on 12 September to mark the Maldives’ first-ever International Engineers’ Day, with activities designed to spark curiosity about engineering among the nation’s youngest learners.
The event, organised by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, drew families from across the capital. From 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., children explored interactive stalls, played educational games, and engaged with hands-on exhibits that highlighted different branches of engineering. Institutions showcased their role in infrastructure, energy, transport, and urban development, offering young visitors a glimpse into how engineering shapes daily life.
Eight state-owned enterprises and government agencies took part, including the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), Malé City Council, Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Fenaka Corporation, State Electric Company (STELCO), Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Road Development Corporation (RDC), and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). Additional support came from Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC), Dhiraagu, and Ooredoo.
Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, attended the celebrations and commended the initiative. He highlighted the importance of engineers in driving national development and emphasised the need to inspire the next generation to consider careers in the field. Dr Muththalib added that the ministry aims to expand the scale of Engineers’ Day commemorations in the years ahead.
The inaugural celebration underscored the government’s efforts to nurture interest in science and engineering, while also recognising the profession’s central role in building the Maldives’ future.
