President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to fast-track the long-delayed completion of the new school building in Shaviyani Feydhoo, assuring residents that his Administration will take immediate steps to finish the project after years of stagnation.
The President made the commitment while meeting Feydhoo residents during his ongoing visit to the atoll, where he addressed a range of local development concerns.
The school project, which includes the construction of eight classrooms and a multipurpose hall, has remained incomplete for nearly two years, despite being awarded to two separate contractors. Work on the site has been idle for the past six months, drawing concern from the island’s community and parents.
President Muizzu said the Government will not extend existing agreements with previous contractors but will instead directly oversee the remaining construction, ensuring the facility is completed without further delay.
Beyond education, the President outlined several new development plans for Feydhoo. He revealed that ten roads will be developed as part of an ongoing island-wide road improvement initiative, designed to enhance mobility and infrastructure.
He also announced that the construction of a new mosque — capable of accommodating up to 500 worshippers — will be included in next year’s national budget. The project, he said, will feature modern facilities and is expected to commence early next year.
In addition, President Muizzu confirmed that the development of a handball court and the turfing of the island’s football stadium will be contracted to a private company before the end of this year.
Turning to healthcare, the President said the Government plans to upgrade the Feydhoo Health Centre into a 24-hour operational facility, complete with expanded services and staff recruitment to meet growing community needs.
He added that an extension building will be developed to house additional wards and service areas, with the project expected to be awarded to a contractor later this year.
President Muizzu reaffirmed that his Administration’s development strategy focuses on equitable investment across all islands, ensuring communities like Feydhoo receive long-overdue projects that directly improve daily life.
