The Maldivian Government has entered a pivotal phase in shaping the nation’s long-term development vision, extending public consultations under the ‘Viluntheri Raajje 2045’ (Resilient Maldives 2045) initiative to the Greater Malé region.
The national campaign, branded as ‘Kurimagu Salla’ or “future dialogue,” is designed to gather public input on how the Maldives should evolve over the next two decades. The first session in the capital region was held at Aminiya School in Malé earlier this month.
According to officials, consultations have already reached 92 percent of inhabited islands, with sessions conducted in 173 locations and over 8,200 participants contributing ideas. The extensive outreach aims to ensure that the 2045 plan reflects the aspirations and perspectives of citizens from across the country.
With atoll-level consultations nearing completion, attention in November shifted to the Greater Malé area, home to the country’s largest population. A series of sessions were organised between 7 and 14 November, including meetings in Hulhumalé Phase I at Rehendhi School (Nov 8), Villimalé at Muhyiddheen School (Nov 9), Malé at Ahmadiyya International School (Nov 13), and Hulhumalé Phase II at S’alaah’udhdheen School (Nov 14).
Each Kurimagu Salla session functions as a working dialogue aimed at identifying citizens’ collective vision for the future. Mohamed Inaz, climate change and environment specialist overseeing the formulation of the national plan, said the process is built on participation and inclusivity.
“We are seeking to understand the aspirations of all participants regarding the Maldives’ future,” Inaz said. “Once ideas are compiled from every island, they will be synthesised into a national development plan that truly reflects the collective vision for 2045.”
The next phase of the initiative will move toward policy formulation, where the insights gathered from participants will be translated into actionable strategies—covering both short-term goals and long-term national priorities.
The Resilient Maldives 2045 initiative is jointly implemented by the President’s Office and the Ministry of Finance and Planning, with operational support from a private consultancy firm. Officials say the process underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the country’s future development is guided by the voices of its people.
